A saint who could not stop giving — and a cloak that kept on growing.

The cloak that keeps growing

You need: One paper patch per child (the printable sheet) · Crayons or pencils · Tape or string to join the patches

1. Give each child one patch.
2. They draw or write ONE thing they will give away this week — a toy, a turn, a kind word.
3. Join every patch edge to edge into a single cloak.
4. Hang it where the parish can see it, and leave it up until next week.

Game — Pass the Blessing

1. Children stand in a circle. One holds a small object — a stone, a coin, a folded cloth.
2. They pass it to someone while naming one good thing about that person.
3. Nobody may receive it twice until everyone has held it once.
4. It ends when it returns to the first child. Everyone has given, and everyone has received.

Closing prayer

Generous God, you filled Brigid's hands so she could fill others'. Teach us to give without counting, and fill our hearts again and again. Amen.

Brigid's Endless Cloak

1. Long ago in green Ireland lived a girl named Brigid, with red-gold hair and bright green eyes. Her cloak was the blue-green of the sea, and her heart was even bigger than the sky. Wherever Brigid went, she brought a little more kindness into the world.
2. Brigid lived in a busy homestead with her father, Dubhthach, a mighty chieftain with a long red moustache. Their house was full of good things — warm bread, sweet butter, and jars of creamy milk. Brigid loved all of it, but most of all she loved to share.
3. Every morning Brigid churned the butter and poured the milk. But when a hungry neighbour knocked, she gave a big golden scoop away. "Take some, and God be with you!" she laughed, filling their bowl to the brim.
4. Brigid gave and gave, all day long. She gave bread to a shivering old man and milk to a crying child. She never stopped to count — she only saw who needed help, and helped.
5. But the more Brigid gave away, the emptier her father's shelves became. Dubhthach frowned at the bare cupboards and the half-empty milk jars. "Where has all our food gone?" he grumbled, tugging his red moustache.
6. "Brigid!" boomed her father. "You have given away half my larder!" Brigid looked up with her honest green eyes. "They were hungry, Father," she said softly, "and we had plenty."
7. Dubhthach shook his head, but deep down he loved his daughter's kind heart. "You cannot give away everything, little one," he sighed. Brigid only smiled, for she believed there was always enough to share.
8. One grey morning, a poor family came to the gate, thin and cold. Brigid searched the house for something to give, but the food was gone. Then she looked down at the fine sword her father kept for feasts — bright with jewels.
9. Without a moment's doubt, Brigid took the jewelled sword and traded it for food and blankets for the family. "Now you will not be hungry or cold," she said. The family blessed her again and again as they hurried home.
10. When Dubhthach found his precious sword gone, his face turned as red as his moustache. "That was worth a herd of cattle!" he roared. Brigid clasped her hands. "But Father, a whole family will eat all winter now."
11. Dubhthach huffed and puffed, but he could not stay angry for long. Secretly, he was proud that his little girl cared so much for the poor. "What am I to do with you?" he chuckled, shaking his head.
12. As Brigid grew, so did her giving. Word spread across the green hills of a girl whose kindness never ran dry. The poor came from far away, and Brigid met each one with open hands and a warm smile.
13. One day Brigid wished to build a home for the poor and the sick, a place of shelter and prayer. She went to the king of the land to ask for a little ground. "Please," she said, "give me only as much land as my cloak will cover."
14. The king looked at Brigid's little folded cloak and laughed. "Such a small cloak? That land is yours!" he said, thinking he had given up almost nothing at all. Brigid smiled and thanked him, and asked four friends to help.
15. Brigid laid her cloak upon the green grass. Then each of her four friends took a corner and began to walk — north, south, east, and west. And something wonderful began to happen.
16. The cloak began to grow! It stretched and stretched across the meadow, wider and wider, soft as sea-foam over the green land. The more they pulled, the more it spread, as if it could never end.
17. The king watched with wide eyes as the endless cloak covered hills and fields, farther than he could see. He fell to his knees. "Truly God is with this girl!" he cried. He gave Brigid all the land, and more besides.
18. On that great stretch of land, Brigid built a home at Kildare. It welcomed the hungry, the sick, and the lonely from every corner of Ireland. No one was ever turned away from Brigid's door.
19. In the kitchen, Brigid poured milk and churned butter for everyone who came. And here was the wonder: no matter how much she gave, the jars were always full again. God kept refilling what Brigid shared.
20. The poor ate their fill of bread and butter and never went home empty. Children laughed, the sick grew stronger, and travellers rested by the fire. Brigid's giving seemed only to grow larger the more she gave.
21. One evening Dubhthach came to visit his daughter's home. He saw the endless meals, the happy faces, and the cloak-covered fields. His eyes filled with tears of pride. "You were right all along, my Brigid," he whispered.
22. Brigid ran to hug her father. "You see, Father," she said, "when we share what God gives, it never runs out — it only grows." Dubhthach held her close, prouder than any treasure could make him.
23. From then on, Dubhthach gave freely too, opening his own storehouses to the poor. Father and daughter shared side by side, and their joy multiplied. Giving had become the happiest thing they knew.
24. Season after season, the food never failed and the door never closed. People said Brigid's kindness was like her cloak — it stretched over the whole land and covered everyone in need.
25. The Bible teaches the very lesson Brigid lived: "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." Brigid gave water to the thirsty world, and God refreshed her again and again.
26. Brigid grew up to become one of the most beloved saints in all of Ireland. To this day her cross is woven from rushes, and her name means kindness that never ends. The girl who gave everything is remembered forever.
27. So remember Brigid whenever you share what you have — a toy, a snack, or a kind word. For the more love you give away, the more love grows inside you. Just like Brigid's endless cloak.
28. And Brigid's cloak, they say, is still spreading — every time someone chooses to give. May your heart be generous like hers, and may God fill it up again and again. The end.
